FAQs

  • Chinese Medicine is an holistic model of healthcare with a goal of bringing the whole person into balance. Unlike Western Medicine, it does not merely treat symptoms, instead it treats the underlying cause of illness. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are helpful not only in recovering from disease but also in prevention of illness. Some of the conditions we have seen the most success with include:

Addiction, Allergies/Asthma, Anxiety, Arthritis, Chronic and Acute Pain, Chronic Fatigue, Colds/Flus, Digestive Troubles, Gynecological Issues, Infertility, Insomnia, Low Immunity, Menopause,Migraines, Neurological, Disorders, Skin Disorders, Sports Injuries, Stress/Depression

  • It is not recommended to receive treatment if you are very hungry and/or extremely tired. Therefore, patients should have a small meal or snack before the appointment and wear comfortable clothing. Please let us know if you are pregnant or have a pacemaker so appropriate acupuncture points can be selected. In addition, please have list of any medications you are taking.

  • Acupuncture needles are very thin and are not painful like hypodermic needles. There can be a sensation of warmth or heaviness at the insertion point but most patients find that there is no discomfort. The needles are retained for 20-30 minutes while you relax.

  • Each point has a specific function and indication. Based on your health history and present symptoms combined with your Chinese Medicine Diagnosis, the appropriate acupuncture points are chosen. The points may be distributed over the entire body.

  • This will vary for each patient. Most people feel very relaxed and sometimes euphoric. It is advised to refrain from vigorous activities for 2 hours after your treatment.

  • The number of treatments needed varies from person to person. Important factors include the duration and severity of your health condition as well as consistency of treatment. Two to three treatments may be sufficient to treat an acute condition and a series of 8-15 may be needed to resolve a more chronic condition.

  • Herbal formulas compliment an acupuncture treatment and are encouraged but they are not required. Each herbal formula is made to treat your specific constitution and conditions.

  • More and more insurance companies are covering acupuncture services. If you think your health plan may cover acupuncture, we can give you a receipt for you to submit to your insurance company. We do not bill insurance directly for community acupuncture, however.

“ Finally – a full nights rest!

After years of sleepless nights caused by total body sweat inducing nightmares, SF Community Acupuncture has given me the gift of a full night’s rest. And while my weekly sessions over the last few months have been focused on sleep, other health maladies have substantially improved as a side benefit. The calm, welcoming environment and the trust I have for Rebekah and Rebecca truly makes each treatment a pleasant experience… even though I’m full of needles.
